Water Safety month: Water Safety Tips for Summertime

Did you know May is Water Safety Month?

June is around the corner, and here in the Pacific Northwest, we’ve finally had more than 2 sunny days in a row! We’ve had a 40 degree difference over the past week. Yikes! More than anything, this heat wave is a reminder that Summer is on its way. Memorial day often signifies the start of warm outdoor activities: camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, grilling with friends… the list goes on and on. Let’s look at how to keep safe during some of these water-related activities!

Pool

A lot of the tips for pool safety are obvious. However, they are good reminders going into the hot months.

Take swimming lessons. Enroll your kids in swim lessons as well. This makes for a more fun experience in pools, and helps with safety for years to come.

Don’t dive in a shallow water! Protect your neck. Opt for belly flopping instead. Or, you know, use the pool ladder.

Beach

A cold beer and hot sand? Sounds like a nice combination! However, don’t combine swimming or boating with alcohol. Alcohol will affect your judgement, for starters.

Visiting the ocean? Be aware of rip currents. Rip Currents account for most of the rescues performed by lifeguards. One of the most important aspects is stay calm if possible. Then, swim parallel to the shore. Once you’re sure you’re out of the rip current, you can swim back towards the shore.

“If caught in a rip current, experts say don’t fight the current directly — swim out of it in a direction that follows the shoreline, then swim back to the shore once you are clear.” –Texas A&M

When taking a dip in the ocean or lake, go to beaches that have life guards.

Out on a boat? Wear a life-jacket, and make sure it fits correctly. A child’s life-jacket has collar handles so the child can be grabbed more easily.

Health

Learn to perform CPR. While ideally you’d hope to never need to use CPR, it’s an invaluable skill.

If you’re sick, stay out of the pool. There’s no need for others to get sick from you.

Hydration

Water Safety Month wouldn’t be complete without me mentioning keeping hydrated.

That beer I mentioned earlier? Sorry, it’s not a good substitute for water. It’s easy to get dehydrated when you’re enjoying warm-weather activities. Pack water bottles with slices of lemon or cucumber so you’ll look forward to the refreshing beverage.

Also make sure you’re keeping Fido and Spot watered on those hot days as well!
